May 2024 Meeting

Date:  Tuesday, May 21st, 2024

Time:  7:00 PM

*Due to a few scheduling conflicts in 2024 with Bayland, and after much deliberation by your HBA board members, we have decided to change our meeting location for the remainder of this year.  We brought up this possibility at the last meeting and received only positive feedback from the HBA members present since the new meeting space is much more centrally located near Rice University.

Our NEW meeting location going forward will be:
First Christian Church
1601 Sunset Blvd., Houston, TX 77005

Speaker Bio:  Mr. Bishop Decker retired from Chevron in 2006 but continued to work as a consultant all over the world until late 2019.

In the fall of 2013, his daughter gifted Mr. Decker with a “Groupon” for a beekeeping class from Round Rock Honey and he was hooked.  He set up his first Langstroth hive in the spring of 2014 in the backyard of his Kingwood-area home, where it thrived.  In 2015, he added 2 “home-built” top bar hives.

Mr. Decker now keeps 3 top bar hives and 15 Langstroth hives spread out over a 20-mile radius from his Kingwood neighborhood.  His bees are treatment-free and come from local feral stock.  In his own words, “some can be a little frisky but not mean enough to swap out queens.”

As a long-time vegetable gardener, keeping bees was a natural fit to his gardening pursuits. Mr. Decker is also a homebrewer, so being able to add his own honey into the mix was a bonus.  His Honey Blonde Ale is a favorite among his friends and family.

So far in 2024, Mr. Decker has already caught 3 swarms and his hives are doing beautifully.
